    Roads program

The Queensland Government is investing more than $12 billion in roads projects across the state, representing a funding increase of 38 per cent. Over the next five years, the government will complete 7,500 kilometres of roads – equal to a quarter of the existing network.

    Urban congestion

South East Queensland is one of Australia’s fastest growing region. With this growth comes challenges – including urban congestion.

Traffic, freight and commuter demand that outweighs the capacity of the road and public transport system causes congestion. The Queensland Government is working with industry, the community and all levels of government to implement a balanced approach.

Some of the ways we are addressing congestion in the South East include:

    • Record spending to build more roads, busways and cycleways
    • Implementing initiatives that aim to change the way people travel
    • Investing in public transport services to deliver more train and bus seats

Find out more about key initiatives to address congestion and make it easier to get around the South East.

We are already well on our way to a more efficient transport network in the south east, with a number of completed projects in use.

    Bruce Highway Strategy

The Bruce Highway is one of Queensland’s most important roads, linking major regional centres to each other and the south east. It’s a part of the daily lives of thousands of Queenslanders who live and work along it.

As our regions grow and strengthen, a safe, reliable and efficient transport system is essential. Through the Bruce Highway Upgrade Strategy, the Queensland Government is providing a comprehensive long-term masterplan to improve the safety, reliability, capacity, transport efficiency and flood immunity of the Bruce.

The plan outlines more than 50 short, medium and long-term priorities spanning the length of the Bruce from Brisbane to Cairns.
