    Rebuilding Queensland

The unprecedented weather events of summer 2010-11 caused widespread devastation across Queensland. Torrential rain, extensive flooding and Cyclone Yasi left 100% of the state disaster declared.

The resulting damage left the government with an unprecedented reconstruction task. We are determined to not just rebuild Queensland, but to build it back better than before. In partnership with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, we will rebuild communities that are stronger and more resilient.

In addition, we are committed to ensuring we are prepared for future events at all levels, and have the appropriate response when they occur. In September this year, the Premier launched a paper to provide an overview of our disaster management resilience and details of projects being delivered throughout the state.

    Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal

In the wake of the worst natural disasters in our history, the generosity shown by thousands of people from Australia and around the world was overwhelming. More than $277 million was donated to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal, making it the country’s second largest appeal ever.

Hundreds of staff worked around the clock to distribute funds to more than 40,000 Queenslanders affected by the floods and cyclone. It was one of the fastest disbursements undertaken, with an average of $1.5 million paid out each day to those in need.

The Premier has expressed her sincere gratitude to everyone who donated. The final report about the Disaster Relief Appeal is now available to view.
